GETTING CLOSE TO DEPARTURE

1 of May here in Sweden. Trees are getting green, the sun out and the sea blue. Time to go sailing. Departure is planned to 21 of this month.

Luckily most things are in there place. I am getting a bit nerveus as if something have been forgotten. I prepare for one year at sea, hoping for 300 days.

A new rollover test is planned for 18 of May 14:00. Not that I think its neccesary, Exlex should have even better stability now with all the food and water, but yacht design is complicated, so just to be sure.

It will be nice to know for sure that Exlex always will comes back after capsizes.

Below a few pictures. Click once or twice to enlarge.

Below my touthbrushes and bowl and waterbottle. Also a knife and a ratchet and Torx bits fitting the screws holding down the hatches.

The tracker inReach is positioned in the main cabin. I have tested to send sms texts 140 characters. I think I got the hang of it.

Trying out Blue Peter: All persons should report on board as the vessel is about to proceed to sea.

MORE WATER

Surprisingly food for 360 days took up less space than expected. This gives me the possibility to add more water. I have added four 12 liter jerry cans in the aft port hatch. Tomorrow I try to do the same on the port side. There is already about 47 liters but not so close packed.

More water at the aft end and low down will give the boat more stability and make her easier to self-steer down wind.

Besides that I will spend Easter antifouling the hull for a secound time.

Progress have been made on Next Design. She is now 7.8 meter long and 1.28 meter beam.

At 1.2 tons dispalacement and a waterline of 7.2 meters or 23.6 feet she will have an lenght displacement ratio of about 90 which is good for planing down wind in a good breeze.

She will also be small enough to yuloh with little effort even by an old man.

She has a strong flat bottom and a draft of 20 cm or 8 inches. She will be good for deep as well as shallow waters.

FOOD PACKED

Hello.
The food is now packed and repacked
To my great surprise it was more than enough space. Therefore just to be safe I have added 47 liters of water to the existing 56 a big increase. It feels good becouse the rainwater catching system is untried.
Electronics have arriveid  2 Garmin GPS with maps all the way to NZ. Also two Garmin inReach and I am testing one. Seams to work.

Stowing

Hello friends
Things are going well. The talk i Göteborg was well recieved. I came back with plenty of ingredients thanks to Engelhardt.
Below is a video about me packing.
Packing is done and one compartment in the boat is stowed. There is hope that it all will fit. It did not look so first so I stretched Next Design to 7,8 X 1,44. The idee is to have place for a girl to and with one more person even more food have to be carrried. I have also got an idea for an excellent cabin layout
Swedish Search Magazine have an article about Exlex. Beppe webmaster is pasting it in menu media.
Day of departure from Västervik is now 21 or 22 of May. Ferry from France to Ireland 27 of May 18:30.
Days up here in the north is getting longer. Life is smiling, everything looks good.

AN ARTICLE WITH PICTURES

Hi
The German yachting magazin Yacht has published a story about Exlex.
Below are some pictures.

As you can see its the current issue number 4 2018 Its 8 pages long with many pictures.

Exlex sailing in Stockholm. Now for the ocean I have antifouled her, color blue being a patriot. A third mast will be added for the long voyage.

The reason for the round bow is my fear for broaching. Exlex is strong enough to not being harmed by broaches but I do not like the idea. I use these pictures becouse I do not have any of my own.

Muesli breakdown

For those used to the European notation, interested in nutrition, that do not have a calculater here is a breakdown of my muesli ingredients.
Almond flour 15%
Dried Blueberries grinded 9%
Whole Milk powder 18%
Oat Flakes 35%

ANTIFOULING

I have now started to antifoul Exlex. One side of the rudders and the daggerboard as well as the starboard side is done. Today I did the bottom. Unfortunately my neighbours were not happy about the smell. I will be more careful when I do the port side, doing the painting after work hours.
The work with a roller went very swiftly half an hour at most.
When the antifouling is done the important work on Exlex is done. I will keep doing a few odd jobs just get her in peak condition.

Exlex seen from the aft. Yellow and blue is the Swedish colors. The wings aft is for the stearing lines to the twin rudders. I have found a much better solution for the Next Design.
Exlex bottom and bow. The slot is for the daggerboard replacing the leeboards. It was the only place I could fine. I had to sacriface 10 liters of water. Something I ill could afford. I have a better solution for Next Design.

PROVISIONING

I will eat twice a day, breakfast and lunch four hours later.
Me, I am afraid of insulin. Alzheimer is diabetes type 3. After four hours of no eating there be no insulin in the blood and my mitocondrias switches over to use stored fat for fuel. That’s the food strategy.
Some people say, “Thats not much of a variation”
I say, “Cows only eat grass and wolfs only eat meat”
Modern society is so boring and there is so much food that we have to be stimulated by spices and chefs and different foods to eat. At sea in a small boat its different. Life itself out there is so interesting that I do not need stimulants.
My breakfast consists of one can of sardines, one slice of dense dark rye bread and muesli.
One meal of muesli contains:
Almond flour 25 grams
Dried grinded blueberries 15 grams
Whole milk powder 30 grams
Oats flakes 60 grams
Raisins 20 grams
Walnuts 20 grams
Total 170 grams of muesli for each meal
My lunch is the same as breakfast but no sardines.
I hope to make the voyage in about 300 days, but 2018 may turn out to be a bad year weather vise. To have a margin I will load Exlex with food for 400 days. The weight of that food is 240 kilos. It breaks down into:
136 kilos muesli, 64 kilos sardines and 40 kilos bread.
My water capacity is 56 liters. There are two rain catchers. Hopefully there will be some rain otherwise I have to beg.
A big job is to vacuum pack the muesli and the bread and store it safely in Exlex.
I will also have plenty of multivitamin/mineral supplements.
I look forward to be out on the deep, wet, endless, eternal ocean eating muesli and sardines.
