Stowing

Hello friends
Things are going well. The talk i Göteborg was well recieved. I came back with plenty of ingredients thanks to Engelhardt.
Below is a video about me packing.
Packing is done and one compartment in the boat is stowed. There is hope that it all will fit. It did not look so first so I stretched Next Design to 7,8 X 1,44. The idee is to have place for a girl to and with one more person even more food have to be carrried. I have also got an idea for an excellent cabin layout
Swedish Search Magazine have an article about Exlex. Beppe webmaster is pasting it in menu media.
Day of departure from Västervik is now 21 or 22 of May. Ferry from France to Ireland 27 of May 18:30.
Days up here in the north is getting longer. Life is smiling, everything looks good.

AN ARTICLE WITH PICTURES

Hi
The German yachting magazin Yacht has published a story about Exlex.
Below are some pictures.

As you can see its the current issue number 4 2018 Its 8 pages long with many pictures.

Exlex sailing in Stockholm. Now for the ocean I have antifouled her, color blue being a patriot. A third mast will be added for the long voyage.

The reason for the round bow is my fear for broaching. Exlex is strong enough to not being harmed by broaches but I do not like the idea. I use these pictures becouse I do not have any of my own.

Inspiration

During my planned long sail some days will be gray with contrary winds. To prevent me from start to feel downhearted I will bring with me a model of Next Design.
The one I have shown pictures of scale 1/20 is to big, there is no place for it. Therefore I have made onother one scale 1/40 eight times as small by volyme.
To cheer me up I will look at my small model instantly I will realise that although it is gray abouve the clouds mother sun is shining as brightly as ever. My heart once again filled with sunshine I will fight the contrary wind and make progress.
Below a picture.

NEXT DESIGN

Here is some more iterations on the Next Design
Click once or twice to enlarge.

In the aft compartment there is a low countertop on each side of me 30 cm high, 40 cm lengthwise towards the bow. Each square is 20 cm. The storage below serves to keep food The aft compartment can be rearranged to serve as a cabin for a guest. Of course she has to move when the boat needs assistance. There is a centerboard on starboard side also water that when not filled up can be mowed to the windward side.
Me sitting on the port side in the aft cabin. Ample place for even a taller person. To my left towards the bow of the boat is storage for eating things.
Modell with 3 balanced lug sails each 4 sq meter.
Modell seen from aft heading down wind
The modell seen from abouve. Two of the holes that can hold the mast are seen on the starboard side. The mast can be mowed around to suit the conditions. They are not more heavy than a strong oar. The holes can also be used to hold a strong winch to haul the boat up on a beach or back into deep water when she has run aground.

ANTIFOULING

I have now started to antifoul Exlex. One side of the rudders and the daggerboard as well as the starboard side is done. Today I did the bottom. Unfortunately my neighbours were not happy about the smell. I will be more careful when I do the port side, doing the painting after work hours.
The work with a roller went very swiftly half an hour at most.
When the antifouling is done the important work on Exlex is done. I will keep doing a few odd jobs just get her in peak condition.

Exlex seen from the aft. Yellow and blue is the Swedish colors. The wings aft is for the stearing lines to the twin rudders. I have found a much better solution for the Next Design.
Exlex bottom and bow. The slot is for the daggerboard replacing the leeboards. It was the only place I could fine. I had to sacriface 10 liters of water. Something I ill could afford. I have a better solution for Next Design.

PROVISIONING

I will eat twice a day, breakfast and lunch four hours later.
Me, I am afraid of insulin. Alzheimer is diabetes type 3. After four hours of no eating there be no insulin in the blood and my mitocondrias switches over to use stored fat for fuel. That’s the food strategy.
Some people say, “Thats not much of a variation”
I say, “Cows only eat grass and wolfs only eat meat”
Modern society is so boring and there is so much food that we have to be stimulated by spices and chefs and different foods to eat. At sea in a small boat its different. Life itself out there is so interesting that I do not need stimulants.
My breakfast consists of one can of sardines, one slice of dense dark rye bread and muesli.
One meal of muesli contains:
Almond flour 25 grams
Dried grinded blueberries 15 grams
Whole milk powder 30 grams
Oats flakes 60 grams
Raisins 20 grams
Walnuts 20 grams
Total 170 grams of muesli for each meal
My lunch is the same as breakfast but no sardines.
I hope to make the voyage in about 300 days, but 2018 may turn out to be a bad year weather vise. To have a margin I will load Exlex with food for 400 days. The weight of that food is 240 kilos. It breaks down into:
136 kilos muesli, 64 kilos sardines and 40 kilos bread.
My water capacity is 56 liters. There are two rain catchers. Hopefully there will be some rain otherwise I have to beg.
A big job is to vacuum pack the muesli and the bread and store it safely in Exlex.
I will also have plenty of multivitamin/mineral supplements.
I look forward to be out on the deep, wet, endless, eternal ocean eating muesli and sardines.

PLUMBING PART TWO

Today I found a new resource. Its angeled hoses used in the car industri. Håkan at Västervik Mekonomen has supplied me with them. Thanks Håkan.

Click on the pictures to enlarge them.

Here is the connection from the aft rain catcher to the deck. Three angels have been used. They are connected with nipples secured with hose clamps. An ordinare hose might get a bend that blocks the flow of the water.
Here is the connection from the forward rain catcher and the deck. Two hose angels have been used.

Inside the fore compartment. Here I have been extreemely lucky as often. Only one hose angle have been used. This picture shows the connection between the deck, top part of the picture and the waterproof bulkhead, low in the picture.

Now it is only the middle compartment and the aft one that has to be connected to complete Exlex plumbing system.

Thanks for watching.

PLUMBING

Exlex has started to live a life of her own. Now she wants plumbing. That was not planned, but she has reason, water handling will be much easier. With plumbing I can be busy doing other things while the rainwater fills up my jerry cans.

The forward rain catcher in a bit awkvard position.

Aft rain catcher

To get the water into the jerrycans I use hoses. There are two through deck fitting one forward and one back leading into the aft and forward compartments, from there, fittings connects through the waterproof bulkheads to the jerrycans in the holy sleeping room, holy in the sense that there is no direct holes to the outside.
The jerrycans have a very tight fit and are very secured in place. It would also be awkward to handle the 20 liter containers in the small cabin the solution is to use air pressure to transfer via hoses the water to one liter bottles.

Pressurising the jerry can with the help of my healthy lungs. The compressed air transfers the water to the one-liter bottle from wich its handy to drink.

The picture is from September 19 2015, the idea older. Now I have this idea to use this techniche on Next Design to transfer water to the windward side. This technique is not suitable for a big boat but for my boats I think it is appropriate. Back to the present, here are some details on Exlex plumbing.

This picture is where the water from the aft rain catcher enters the sleeping room, just below the deck. The two ropes are the steering ropes for the port rudder. The thing at the bottom right corner is the two jammers that locks the rudder in the desired position.

The same fitting from the eating room. The two steering ropes and two antenna cables one for the AIS one for the GPS can be seen. Its not waterproof, but its just under the deck and very off center. I do not think its very likely that water will enter my sleeping room here.
Here I am modifying the lid of the jerry cans for the water hoses. The brown Tufnol piece is added to get a better grip to get the lid well screwed on.

Screwing the pieces together using bedding compound between the Tufnol and the lid

The two lids with the hoses that goes into the jerry cans. To the very right of the picture can be seen that on the end of the hose a nipple has been added as a sinker.
Here is a close up
